Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Championship in Over Two Years
19 of Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces
A comeback Daniil Medvedev claimed his first trophy for 882 days with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament final.
The Russian, a ex- world number one, has experienced a difficult year, winning just a single victory at the Grand Slams and suffering a difficult moment at the US Open.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serve in specific - resulted in him falling of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with former mentor his previous coach.
Now collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently advanced in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought three-set victory over opponent Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's maiden trophy after the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hardcourt since March of the previous year.
Success also indicates the Russian has achieved 21 championships at 21 different events.
"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my children simultaneously, so to win a title is particularly special," stated tennis professional the champion.
"This title is in honour of my child Victoria, because the maiden victory I achieved when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."
The athlete, the former major winner, had failed in his past six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament previously this season.
The player's defensive approach and recurring emotional displays on the playing surface had prompted commentators to wonder if his ability to compete at the top level was over.
However the player has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and perform positively, supported by an improved serve.
He fought back from a break down in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, securing 4 of the last five exchanges to go ahead.
The pair swapped breaks in the following set before Moutet, striving for his maiden ATP Tour title, gained dominance to create a final set.
He saved four early chances in a competitive final set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to secure the win.
Appropriately, Medvedev secured the win with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to handle a volley after over two and a half hours.
